Farm, Day Eight
Aug. 4th, 2008 11:26 pmLast day at the farm! We’ll be leaving tomorrow morning for home. Nothing much happened today.
Except, you know, it rained indoors.
I went into the living room to sit down and read my book, and found myself sitting in water. I looked around. There was a puddle around the chair. I looked up. Lo and behold, there was an open skylight above me, letting in rain. After cleaning that up and working out how to close the skylight (which involved climbing on the roof and running around like a headless chicken for a while) I went downstairs, to work on FBaWtFT. I sat on the bed. I took off my shoes. I relaxed for a moment. I picked up my laptop.
It was covered in water.
My first thought was that somehow the water from the skylight had leaked through the floor and dripped on to my laptop.
Actually, that’s a lie. My first thought was DEAR MERLIN, WHY MY LAPTOP???!!!
I grabbed the nearest thing (my sheets), wiped the water off, and had a good scream. Only then did I bother to look up.
It was a hot, humid day. Right above the bed were cold water pipes. Water was condensing on the pipes and dripping down. Right onto my laptop.
Luckily, the water didn’t seep into the laptop. It works fine. But for a few hours, as I made sure to let every single speck of water dry, I was scared out of my mind.
Then I went and finished chapter 3 of FBaWtFT. Which I might force D to beta. I need someone to go through and say “Look, this is crap. Harry wouldn’t do that. And what the hell did you mean in this line?” Because everything I write makes lovely sense to me, but not to anyone else. And D is experienced with this type of beta-ing from college essays I handed to her, all panic-sticken.
(Yes, I had a friend beta my college essays. And yes, I think I called it that at the time. Although maybe I just called it ARGH! Having a good beta helps with all sorts of writing projects.)
